This was a trip which we started to organize back then during the skiing vacation. The plan was to visit Tomas and Lenka in their house in Mariazell first of all, especially for those who haven’t done so yet, and then the hiking was a secondary goal.
As usual, Tomas prepared very well‑selected tracks and a plan for each of the 3 days from Friday, the first of May, until Sunday, the third of May.
Unfortunately, as the famous Ötscherschutzhaus was closed, although it was supposed to be fully operating, we needed to adjust the plan slightly. So upon our meeting in Mariazell we all sat down together and brainstormed all the available possibilities. As an outcome, we prepared a route to Ötscher (name derived from Slavic otec = father) with 2 variants.
Variant A route started in Taschelbach and took some 3:35 over 11 km and with some 830 m elevation gain to Ötscherschutzhaus.

This was a doable option for the majority: Tomas, Lenka, Senko, Zuzka and me. Meanwhile, Miska, having a light cold, and Eci used the shorter Variant B: from Lackenhof to Ötscherschutzhaus. We managed to meet there together with a small deviation of approx. 30 minutes. After a short snack break, all of us (except Miska) continued to the famous Ötscher peak (1893 m).
On Saturday we decided on a less demanding round track directly from Mariazell, Rasing, towards Bürgeralpe, with a bit of an adventure stop at Hohlensteinhöhle.

This is a 350 m long cave system which is freely accessible, meaning no light, no signs, nothing, only the feeling of not knowing where you go. Enjoying a tasty lunch at Bürgeralpe, where Miska joined us by the cable car, we descended back to Mariazell and Rasing.
For the last day of our visit we went just for a short walk from Rasing to Erlaufsee, around the lake, and then for a Sunday schnitzel in Mariazell.
